Program Description

Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) involves developing technical and artistic skills to become a drafting technician or technologist with strong knowledge of industry standard software. This program introduces you to the concepts of drafting. You will learn the basics of AutoCAD, mathematics, topography, architecture, physical sciences, and other related topics. After successful completion of the first year of study you will receive a certificate in Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) focusing on traditional and more advanced computer-aided drafting skills relevant to the demands of the changing Canadian industry. This program is aligned with industry standards. Annual meetings of an advisory board made up of local professionals, college faculty and students ensure standards are maintained. In addition, computer hardware and software is kept current with regular upgrades.This program will be challenging. Having a strong background in computers, mathematics, and physics is an asset to anyone entering the program. Time management skills are also necessary as the program has an especially heavy course load.

Graduates of our program may apply to local, provincial, or federal police forces, other law enforcement agencies, and to federal agencies and corrections. However, you must apply to these agencies directly as Medicine Hat College does not supply graduates directly to any agency. It is imperative in this regard that you assess the hiring standards, especially the minimum physical qualifications such as eyesight, before expending extensive time concentrating on a law enforcement career. Program Description

The Criminal Justice diploma program prepares students for a multitude of careers in criminal justice, including numerous government and non-government areas. These careers include opportunities in law enforcement, policing, private security, border enforcement, intelligence, criminal profiling, legal services, private investigations, and community peace officers. The program is designed to prepare students to enter any one of many areas of public, contract, or private criminal justice occupations. Studies include exposure to an array of investigative techniques and practices including forensics, crime scene investigations, threat and risk assessments, and methods for gaining employment in the field of your choice. Students will also gain an understanding of the criminal justice system through studies in human relations, psychology, sociology, investigations, policing, security, criminology, and law.

Practicum Students are selected for practicum on the basis of academic performance, professional suitability, fitness and conduct,volunteer community service, and availability of practicum sites. Students should be aware that under the Protection for Persons in Care Act, they may be required to provide a current Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Search as well as an Alberta Children’s Services Intervention Record Check to the practicum placement supervisors prior to starting placements. A current First Aid Certificate and Heath Immunization Record will be required in practicum placements.
Program Description

In the Early Learning and Child Care (ELCC) program, you will learn the importance of play in the lives of children, and our classes give you lots of hands-on learning opportunities. We play with art materials, story props, and science and math materials to better understand how children learn and how we can help teach them. Our program also gives you the opportunity to apply theory to practice every semester through a five-week practicum setting. You’ll be able to practice your communication skills, better understand child development, and provide developmentally appropriate programming for children. NEWL:Our ELCC program will help you work with children in a variety of settings or move on to other educational programs. Many students have said our program helped them grow on a personal level and was very useful when they became parents themselves. Others have entered specialized areas of child care, or assumed leadership responsibilities in a variety of settings.
